Athlete's Foot

How can I prevent Athlete's Foot?

There was a reason why your parents told you to wear thongs around the pool, at swimming lessons and in the public shower blocks on camping trips. Athlete's Foot is highly contagious and is easily spread. While you can get it by touching the toes or feet of a person who has the infection, it's most commonly picked up by walking on contaminated surfaces. Hot and humid environments like the locker room, swimming pool and public shower provide the perfect breeding ground for the fungi to grow and even your family shower may be contaminated if a member of your family suffers from Athlete's Foot.

Here's how you can help to avoid an Athlete's Foot infection:

  • Keep your feet clean and dry. Dry between your toes after swimming or showering.
  • Wear footwear that allows your feet to breathe to reduce moisture on the skin and stay dry.
  • Wear cotton socks and change them twice a day if necessary.
  • Allow your shoes to air for at least 24 hours before putting them back on.
  • Wear rubber thongs in public pools, locker rooms and showers.
