Beach Fungus

Beach fungus, while having nothing to do with the beach, is not usually irritating or uncomfortable, is a fungal infection which may take some time to treat.

What is Beach Fungus?

Beach Fungus (tinea versicolor) is a harmless skin disease caused by an overgrowth of fungus called "Malassezia furfur" which occurs naturally on the skin. Beach fungus usually occurs on the upper body, arms, neck and occasionally the face and is more common in young people. It causes the appearance of multiple tan, brown, salmon, or white scaling lesions. In fair skinned people the condition is often diagnosed in summer months because the lesions, which do not tan, become more obvious against tanned skin.
