Ringworm is a form of tinea and refers to the several types of fungal infections that attack the top layer of the skin, scalp and nails. It's caused by fungi called dermatophytes that live on the dead tissue and is called ringworm because it produces an itchy red rash that has a ring-like appearance. Ringworm of the body (skin) usually starts as a red scaly patch or bump which over time may begin to look like a ring or series of rings. The condition can also take form as ringworm of the scalp.
