Thrush

How do I know if I have Thrush?

The telltale signs of thrush include itching, soreness and a discharge. An irritation around the vagina is often the first warning, but you may not experience all symptoms and they can range from mild to severe.

These are the most common symptoms of thrush:

  • Itching and burning around the entrance of the vagina (vulva)
  • Redness of the vulva area and there may even be a swelling of the vaginal lips (labia)
  • A discharge that can be thick cottage cheese like in appearance

These are the less common symptoms of thrush:

  • A stinging sensation caused by this soreness when you pass urine
  • Sex may be uncomfortable due to the tenderness of this area

If you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms, then head down to your local pharmacy for help. Early treatment is important, as if left untreated it can be uncomfortable.

The following symptoms are NOT usually signs of thrush:

  • Abnormal or irregular vaginal bleeding
  • Blood stained discharge
  • Vulva or vaginal sores, ulcers or blisters
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Pain (not stinging) when passing urine
  • Fever or chills
  • Smelly and/or unusual coloured discharge
