Thrush

Do you have Thrush for the first time?

Getting thrush for the first time isn't much fun. There's the itching, the soreness and often the discharge - but for first time sufferers, this is often the least of their concern. When you get thrush for the first time, there's often the additional worry that something more serious is to blame. While the symptoms can be very uncomfortable, thrush is a medical problem that most women experience at least once. If you think you are suffering from thrush for the first time, please seek medical advice from your doctor.

Common causes of a thrush infection include:

  • Antibiotics destroy the 'friendly' bacteria that keep the growth of yeast in the vagina under control, allowing the yeast to take over.
  • Hormones change due to pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and before a period - this can alter the pH balance in the vagina to provide a yeast thriving environment.
  • Stress caused by a poor diet, busy lifestyle or lack of sleep can make women more susceptible to a thrush infection.
  • Immune systems can be weakened by illness making the body prone to a thrush infection.
  • Hygiene habits like the excessive use of deodorants or perfumed sprays in the vaginal area as they may alter the pH levels which could lead to a thrush infection.
  • Clothing like tight pants, leggings, pantyhose or synthetic underwear can all create a warm, moist place for thrush to develop.
